The LORD God said:
“It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him.”
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
“It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him.”
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs
and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman
the rib that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs
and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman
the rib that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
“This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called ‘woman,’
for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called ‘woman,’
for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.
The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.

I love reading this scripture because in it I find my reason for wanting to be a wife. My older brother and I used to sit and dream together about our futures. We would speculate about what a perfect day would be, what our perfect job would be, and what our future spouse would be like. On one occasion when my brother had come home for vacation from UCDavis, and I was on break from UCLA I finally was honest with myself and with my brother about what I wanted to be. I told him that I didn't really want to be a lawyer, I wanted to be a perfect helpmate and a stay at home mom when the time came. I wanted to make dinners and cookies, I wanted to take long walks in the park with my children, and I wanted,, ideally, to help me husband with whatever business he was involved in. It was certainly taboo to admit this in our culture today. Why is that? Individualism has taken the place of Family First.
I really could, and have, written an essay on this concept, but I'll save it for another time:)
Jesus, I want to be a helpmate to my husband, help me to find a new way to make him feel loved, and to help him grow closer to you. Amen
