Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals
that the LORD God had made.
The serpent asked the woman,
“Did God really tell you not to eat
from any of the trees in the garden?”
The woman answered the serpent:
“We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden;
it is only about the fruit of the tree
in the middle of the garden that God said,
‘You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.’”
But the serpent said to the woman:
“You certainly will not die!
No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it
your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods
who know what is good and what is evil.”

I have had more than a few "Ah-Ha!" moments induced by mistakes. Ironically enough, most of the "mistakes" were preceded by my parents warnings, specifically my mom's, against what I had done. Some of the warnings were directly before, some years before...but mostly I remember what my mom had said about whatever it was, after I had been through the pain that making the wrong decision brought. My mom must have experienced something like what God experienced when his perfect creations did not head his warnings against the tree of knowledge. My mom modeled to me God's love, every day when I got home, through elementary school, high school, and even college, she would ask how my day was, and be unsatisfied with a brief and clearly not thorough explanation. She always had a way of finding out the true happenings of the day, Failures as well as successes. When I would reveal my failures she would show her disappointment, but be ready to help me to get out of a mess, or learn something. Like Adam and Eve I would have preferred to hide, I had realized my imperfection but also my mom sought me out like God did Adam and Eve. He loved them so much he wouldn't let them live in their darkness.
Jesus, help me to be more like you, and to learn from the example of my own mother. Amen
