Do you not realize that everything
that goes into a person from outside cannot defile,
since it enters not the heart but the stomach
and passes out into the latrine?”
(Thus he declared all foods clean.)
“But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him.
From within the man, from his heart,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile.”

I used to believe in original sin, but now after having children; I BELIEVE IT. My children have not learned the craft of hiding their feelings or intentions. You can see every selfish desire all over their faces whenever they occur. The first word my children learn in sign language is, more! I do my part in teaching them to ask nicely, to be polite, and to share. I'm wondering today though if I shouldn't be doing more. Perhaps I need to be getting to the heart of the matter, teaching my children self control as a matter of the heart. Get down to their level and discuss in a way that they can understand that other people have needs and we need to be always aware of those over our own to be pleasing God.
Jesus, teach me how to teach my children about you. Help me to be an example of your love. Teach me how to redirect my childrens' hearts towards you. Amen
