“In praying, do not babble like the pagans,
who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them.
Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This is how you are to pray:
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
“If you forgive men their transgressions,
your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men,
neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”
This prayer is the first prayer I learned as a child from my Dad. He would come in every night, tuck me into bed, and say this prayer with me. It gave me so much comfort. I knew that I not only did I have my own big strong Dad to protect me, but also a Father in Heaven.
Now the words resonate even more with me...they remind me what I wake up each day for, and how simple my life can really be. I can be like a child, not worrying about what things I need, only how to serve my Father in Heaven, knowing also that he will protect me from temptations that I can not handle.
My daughter is three now...I'm going to begin to try to actively teach her the words of this prayer.
